Dontcha think? Well for some reason that's all I want to do. Mostly to warm the house up & because who doesn't love homemade baked goods? I'm not big on new year's resolutions, actually not a fan at all. So I decided to come up with a winter "challenge" and kick-off. The plan is to make one homemade soup (including chili) per week through March. I can learn new recipes, save money and (hopefully) shed the Christmas cookie blubber.<br /><br />Today I found and made this simple recipe for black bean cumin soup and decided to share. I tend not to follow recipes exactly so I am posting my version, but the original recipe in full <a href="http://www.blogger.com/*%202%20tablespoons%20olive%20oil%20%20%20%20%20*%201%20onion,%20chopped%20%20%20%20%20*%201%20carrot,%20chopped%20%20%20%20%20*%204%20garlic%20cloves,%20chopped%20%20%20%20%20*%202%20teaspoons%20ground%20cumin%20%20%20%20%20*%201%20to%202%20teaspoons%20chopped%20jalape%C3%83%C2%B1o%20chile%20with%20seeds,%20divided%20%20%20%20%20*%202%2015-%20to%2016-ounce%20cans%20black%20beans,%20undrained%20%20%20%20%20*%201%2015-ounce%20can%20petite%20diced%20tomatoes%20in%20juice%20%20%20%20%20*%201%201/2%20cups%20low-salt%20chicken%20broth%20%20%20%20%20%20%20*%20Chopped%20fresh%20cilantro%20%20%20%20%20*%20Chopped%20green%20onions%20%20%20%20%20*%20Crumbled%20feta%20cheese%20%20%20%20Read%20More%20http://www.epicurious.com/recipes/food/views/Black-Bean-Soup-with-Cumin-and-Jalapeno-109772#ixzz19RHuIgkY">can be found here</a>.<br /><br />Black Bean Cumin Soup <span style="font-style: italic;">via epicurious</span><br /><div><div style="overflow: hidden; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; text-align: left; text-decoration: none; border: medium none;"><ul class="ingredientsList"><li class="ingredient">2 tablespoons olive oil</li><li class="ingredient">1 onion, chopped</li><li class="ingredient">1-2 carrots, chopped</li><li class="ingredient">1 stalk celery chopped<br /></li><li class="ingredient">4 garlic cloves, chopped</li><li class="ingredient">3 teaspoons ground cumin</li><li class="ingredient">1 can mild green chilis or 1 chopped jalapeño chile with seeds, divided<span><br /></span></li><li class="ingredient">2 15 to 16 ounce cans black beans, undrained</li><li class="ingredient">1 15 ounce can diced tomatoes in juice</li><li class="ingredient">2 cups low-salt chicken broth</li><li class="ingredient">1 teaspoon salt</li><li class="ingredient">1 teaspoon pepper<br /></li></ul> Optional toppings <ul class="ingredientsList"><li class="ingredient">Chopped fresh cilantro</li><li class="ingredient">Chopped green onions</li><li class="ingredient">Shredded mexican cheese<br /></li><li class="ingredient">Sour Cream</li><li class="ingredient">Avocado</li><li class="ingredient">Tortilla Chips<br /></li></ul><div><div style="overflow: hidden; color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent; text-align: left; text-decoration: none; border: medium none;"><p class="instructions">Heat oil in heavy large pot over medium-high heat. So most of my creations I try to use recycled & vintage fabrics as well as other re-used materials. People always ask, where'd you find it? Well the best place to find used and interesting materials is simple, local thrift stores! Old clothes, blankets and sheets all are good materials for sewing projects. A lot of people donate all sorts of crazy craft supplies as well. Another good resource for these types of items are yard sales, estate sales and even your local church rummage sales.<br /><br /><a href="http://planetgreen.discovery.com/">Planet Green</a> has some great ideas "<a href="http://planetgreen.discovery.com/five-reuses-for/">Five Re-uses for</a>" all sorts of items you would normally toss.<br /><br />Here's one of my favorites:<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhC9hJ7U5NIjXkYuQobrm3qrlowdyEbSGl-lZSOFpwJ1I2f3vq0ikG-aOwmt4rJoe2G_thquPCgjcB11leL8zdXCA5UcCqhF1fNihEwNYB3GmNHg1kdHnrg222WZxZTZJW0vz4KNA/s1600-h/scarves.JPG"><img style="margin: 0pt 10px 10px 0pt; float: left; cursor: pointer; width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhC9hJ7U5NIjXkYuQobrm3qrlowdyEbSGl-lZSOFpwJ1I2f3vq0ikG-aOwmt4rJoe2G_thquPCgjcB11leL8zdXCA5UcCqhF1fNihEwNYB3GmNHg1kdHnrg222WZxZTZJW0vz4KNA/s320/scarves.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5392868840090007250" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><br /><a href="http://planetgreen.discovery.com/fashion-beauty/reuse-moms-silk-scarves.html"><span style="font-size:85%;"><span style="font-weight: bold;">Five Reuses For Your Mom's 80's Silk Scarves</span></span></a><br />By <a href="http://planetgreen.discovery.com/accounts/persona.html?member=115625598">Sarah Novak</a><br /><br /><span style="font-size:85%;">Tie scarves to the strap of your favorite bags. It's a great way to jazz up your purses without having to buy new ones. It's a great accessory, and you can change it up whenever you like.<br /><br />Use it as a headband. <a href="http://planetgreen.discovery.com/fashion-beauty/diy-necktie-headband.html">Elizabeth wrote about making a headband from a necktie</a>. You can also do this with a scarf. Wear it across the forehead for the newest style or, if you're a bit more traditional, you can wear the scarf further back on your head and tie it under your hair.<br /><br />Use your larger silk scarves as <a href="http://planetgreen.discovery.com/fashion-beauty/extra-fabric-sarong.html">sarongs</a>. Just tie it around your waist so that it's a floor length skirt. You can also fold it in half so it's a mini skirt. You can even wrap it around your neck and then around your body so that it looks like a halter dress.<br />Turn them into eye pillows. You can make these fabulous little eye pillows with stuff that you just have sitting around the house. So you can easily space out any time you like. Just check out <a href="http://planetgreen.discovery.com/home-garden/create-eye-pillows.html">my guide to making relaxation eye pillows</a>.<br /><br />Use them as belts. I love to wear loose fitting dresses and cinch them with belts so that they're a little more flattering. Ethan needed some gifts to give to his coworkers too, so this worked out well as a yummy handmade present for a bunch of people.<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgMhnqtg4hU4yqX5gr7e1t4gpKtSfKnRh1WLozDlGYlByxklYfY87KEZthDYT8TSVvqhCv9C891hcIeqSIr-oDzpg5FhX0S0SpB5WgwGh0nWkm_SKWoYypucXxE5tF90GXeHvtd/s1600-h/IMG_0020.JPG"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgMhnqtg4hU4yqX5gr7e1t4gpKtSfKnRh1WLozDlGYlByxklYfY87KEZthDYT8TSVvqhCv9C891hcIeqSIr-oDzpg5FhX0S0SpB5WgwGh0nWkm_SKWoYypucXxE5tF90GXeHvtd/s320/IMG_0020.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5283162370276737074" border="0" /></a><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEippwPPlUry2NuW0txCSk-duhLxPGy2EF6djorSy5bvTSWicVftq0ZwyB66WegF_ScH3_hxdPZKzkC0FHk2Oa5BMSRW-F_rB1S8mO5_4wQtb5-XE-LuvPK23ZPop7TUfk5PpVuw/s1600-h/IMG_0017.JPG"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 250px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEippwPPlUry2NuW0txCSk-duhLxPGy2EF6djorSy5bvTSWicVftq0ZwyB66WegF_ScH3_hxdPZKzkC0FHk2Oa5BMSRW-F_rB1S8mO5_4wQtb5-XE-LuvPK23ZPop7TUfk5PpVuw/s320/IMG_0017.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5283162363976716578" border="0" /></a>I made toffee, and peppermint bark, and when Ethan's mom was in over the weekend, she and Ramona made a huge batch of gingerbread cookies that I threw in to the mix. I sat down for the beginning of the show and the discussion was saving money for the holidays. Joy (the very best one on there!) said her daughter-in-law made pottery and sold it on Etsy.com and people should look there for inexpensive, creative, and all handmade gifts! I couldn't believe it! I am so excited!<br /><br />Love you Joy Bayhar!<br /><br />xo Valteam make-out goodshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09332628507941683800noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-23414624.post-32903312602534280532008-12-15T09:00:00.006-06:002008-12-15T09:12:47.895-06:00Holiday Crafternoon this Sunday<div style="text-align: center;"><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiIU2rNKdPFmW1sjYuu4ureZGQ2KWCk8vKiZicN_fllOvCGSKoLMgGVKn_m2wGekN7QnTWzvk6mIXWcfSUfa9_frn1JCfrez3iW0WtvmG-RRkL5gcW6xn4x0uMzpFSfc_qqIBxm/s1600-h/holidaynooncolor-single.gif"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 249px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiIU2rNKdPFmW1sjYuu4ureZGQ2KWCk8vKiZicN_fllOvCGSKoLMgGVKn_m2wGekN7QnTWzvk6mIXWcfSUfa9_frn1JCfrez3iW0WtvmG-RRkL5gcW6xn4x0uMzpFSfc_qqIBxm/s320/holidaynooncolor-single.gif" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5280032032128594050" border="0" /></a><br />Join me (Amy) this Sunday for a special <a href="http://www.blogger.com/myspace.com/sundaycrafternoon">Holiday Crafternoon</a>, hosted by <a href="http://www.handmadetroit.com/">Handmade Detroit</a> at the <a href="http://www.urbanspoon.com/r/19/237587/restaurant/Detroit/Woodward-Avenue-Brewery-Ferndale">Woodward Avenue Brewery</a> downstairs lounge in Ferndale.<br /><br />We will be set up from 12:00PM until 5:30PM this Sunday, December 21 with lots of great last-minute presents and stocking stuffers for you and yours.<br /><br />Featured artists include:<br />Lish Dorset<br />Bethany Nixon<br />Stephanie Tardy<br />Amy Cronkite<br />Carey Gustafson<br />Eric Lillieberg<br />Courtney Fischer<br />Chris Gorski<br />Michelle Wardowski<br />Veronica Knight<br /><br />This will be the last Handmade Detroit event of the year, and my last event for who knows how long (since baby is coming soon!)<br /><br />Done with your shopping? They were selling toys with dangerously high lead content, toys with unsafe small part, toys with improperly secured and easily swallowed small magnets, and toys made from chemicals that made kids sick. Almost every problem toy in 2007 was made in China.<br /><br />The United States Congress rightly recognized that the Consumer Products Safety Commission (CPSC) lacked the authority and staffing to prevent dangerous toys from being imported into the US. So, they passed the <a href="http://www.cpsc.gov/ABOUT/Cpsia/cpsia.html" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA)</a> in August, 2008. Among other things, the CPSIA bans lead and phthalates in toys, mandates third-party testing and certification for all toys and requires toy makers to permanently label each toy with a date and batch number.<br /><br />All of these changes will be fairly easy for large, multinational toy manufacturers to comply with. Large manufacturers who make thousands of units of each toy have very little incremental cost to pay for testing and update their molds to include batch labels.<br /><br />For small American, Canadian, and European toymakers, however, the costs of mandatroy testing will likely drive them out of business.<br /><br /><ul><li>A toymaker, for example, who makes wooden cars in his garage in Maine to supplement his income cannot afford the $4,000 fee <i>per toy</i> that testing labs are charging to assure compliance with the CPSIA.</li><li>A work at home mom in Minnesota who makes dolls to sell at craft fairs must choose either to violate the law or cease operations.</li><li>A small toy retailer in Vermont who imports wooden toys from Europe, which has long had stringent toy safety standards, must now pay for testing on every toy they import.</li><li>And even the handful of larger toy makers who still employ workers in the United States face increased costs to comply with the CPSIA, even though American-made toys had nothing to do with the toy safety problems of 2007.</li></ul><br />The CPSIA simply forgot to exclude the class of toys that have earned and kept the public's trust: Toys made in the US, Canada, and Europe. The result, unless the law is modified, is that handmade toys will no longer be legal in the US.<br /><br />If this law had been applied to the food industry, every farmers market in the country would be forced to close while Kraft and Dole prospered.<br /><span style="font-size:100%;"><b><br /><div style="margin: 5px 10px 0pt 0pt; display: inline; float: left;"><a href="http://www.handmadetoyalliance.org/Home/fuzz.jpg?attredirects=0" imageanchor="1"><br /></a></div>How You can Help:</b></span><br />Please write to your United States Congress Person and Senator to request changes in the CPSIA to save handmade toys. I'm trying hard to save money, be green, or maybe I just really want something sweet. I look up banana recipes but they all call for baking soda and I only have <span style="font-style: italic; font-weight: bold;">powder</span>. I tried hard to see if I can substitute powder for soda and learned several facts about the differences. Fact: baking soda is 4 times stronger than powder, fact: powder has soda in, fact: powder is more a neutralizer and if your recipe has something acidic in it the recipe calls for soda so you should just use soda and not try and replace with powder. Fine. No banana bread.<br /><br />So I take another look in the cabinets and fridge and I see ingredients. I just know if I combine them together, I can make something, right? Well I located the absolute best website for people like me (and you)! It's AMAZING! <a href="http://www.recipematcher.com/">recipematcher.com</a>! Enter in your ingredients (it will let you select from a list if you need to be more specific like type of sugar, milk, etc.) and hit enter....VOILA! Recipes that match your ingredients! It also tells you if you the percentage it matches to the ingredients you entered and let's you know if you are still missing an ingredient. I entered in several ingredients. I can really leave no stone unturned.<br /><br />My ingredients:<br />Milk - Skim,Flour - Bread,Sugar - White,Sugar - Powdered,Bananas,Peanut Butter,Seasoning - Nutmeg,Seasoning - Cinnamon,Vanilla Extract,Eggs,Pumpkin (Canned)<br /><br />My recipe will be...<br /><br />100% match...Flourless Peanut Butter cookies!<br /><h2> <span style="font-size:100%;">INGREDIENTS</span></h2> <ul><li> 1 cup peanut butter</li><li> 1 cup white sugar</li><li> 1 egg</li></ul><!-- DIRECTIONS --> <h2> <span style="font-size:100%;">DIRECTIONS</span></h2> <ol><li><span> Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (180 degrees C). </span></li><li><span> Combine all ingredients and drop by teaspoonfuls onto a cookie sheet. Bake for 8 minutes. Let cool. Recipe doesn't make many, so you can double recipe. </span></li></ol>Still no recipe using my dead bananas, so I may have to buy the baking soda so I can make banana bread tomorrow.....<br /><br /><table align="left" border="0" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" width="100%"><tbody><tr valign="top"><td align="right" width="22%"><br /></td> <td align="center" width="20%"><br /></td> </tr> </tbody></table>team make-out goodshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09332628507941683800noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-23414624.post-47679219273814112972008-12-01T10:40:00.002-06:002008-12-01T15:02:23.685-06:00where we be.<div style="text-align: center;"><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgbxei73lf_bpigUCehLD6d4XFP4hujuWUTCxtUzuwCFq4-Drb2DbHhhukPYt4VTQrGmzK6OLy6N5IwYUGcOR1OqbrdorSxPDJQl1ko6yO6gzVfNxkq0WXHOZWpzFZwBEmz9obo/s1600-h/FCH+Holiday+Craft+Market+2008+Flyer+3+Locations%21.png"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 320px; height: 243px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgbxei73lf_bpigUCehLD6d4XFP4hujuWUTCxtUzuwCFq4-Drb2DbHhhukPYt4VTQrGmzK6OLy6N5IwYUGcOR1OqbrdorSxPDJQl1ko6yO6gzVfNxkq0WXHOZWpzFZwBEmz9obo/s320/FCH+Holiday+Craft+Market+2008+Flyer+3+Locations%21.png" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5274862643158014626" border="0" /></a>This weekend come out to buy handmade at the <a href="http://www.myspace.com/flintcityhandmade">Flint City Handmade Holiday Market</a> in beautiful Flint, MI!<br /></div>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-23414624.post-80297700888252380362008-11-26T12:43:00.004-06:002008-11-26T13:02:36.884-06:00Art Vs.
